DISCOVERING THE RAMAYANA (October Half Term 2009)Hannnah (10), Thomas, Caroline and Sveena (all 11) had a taste of real drama during half term, when they became part of The Fetch Theatre Company for a day. The young performers learnt how to work with large puppets and masks, under the expert eye of company members Purvin and Nisha. After rehearsing for a day, they went on to play the parts of Hanumans’ monkey army and Ravanna’s demons in a performance of the Ramayana story in the theatre at the Newhampton Arts Centre. Both performers and audience thought it was “fantastic”.
This show was supported by Black Country Touring.
Our next family show is Beauty and the Beast on 19th December. This year Zip Theatre are doing two performances of their popular pantomime at 2pm and 4pm. A family tickets costs £18.

IT’S BETTER THAN SITTING AT HOME! (Summer Holidays 2009)The rain did not stop play at the Newhampton Arts Centre which was buzzing with dance, drama, music and craft activities over the summer.
SUPERHEROES
Senior members of Central Youth Theatre helped young action heroes to create their own show. “Superheroes” was the theme for the week of drama activities for children aged 8-13. “I think this summer school has been brilliant and it has been the best I have ever been to.” Parents agreed “J came home full of excitement, enjoying every minute and couldn’t wait to get there in the morning” “It made the young people feel special and believe in themselves.”
CRAZY CREATURES
Art students, Sangeeta and Leanne, led creative activities for younger children aged 2-7. The children enjoyed listening to stories, imitating hippopotamuses and making masks, sea creatures and insects (and lots of mess!) from recycled materials. As parents said, “It was great that the children were allowed to get on and make things by themselves.”
ALL ABOARD
After responding to a challenge to create a “play in a day” at three different workshops at Penn Hall School, Bilston Town Hall and Newhampton, forty 8-13 year olds took over the Newhampton Theatre to perform their shows. As part of the All Aboard project, children with disabilities and special needs were able to join in. The kids all gave it top marks. “It was really great - I enjoyed making the play and performing in it,” said Chloe aged 10.
HORROR HIGH
Older kids, 12-18, had fun combining music, dance and drama into their own spooky musical, “Horror High”, led by Zip Theatre. “It’s brilliant,” said Iwan, 12. “I’m having a great time.”
Meanwhile, in the Dance Studio, youngsters aged up to 16 joined the Allstars to learn cheerleading skills and a whole range of dance styles and choreography
IT’S BETTER THAN SITTING AT HOME
The Zip Rockschool week attracted 30 bidding musicians, all keen to take part in song writing, recording and performing. “It’s fun” said Jasper (12) and Dominic (13), “You get to learn new things and try out instruments.” They showcased their talents in a lively music extravaganza at the end of the week. Zip also ran creative projects in music, drama and alcohol awareness.
Funding from the Local Network Partnership, Positive Activities for Young People, Short Breaks helped a wide range of children to take part in lots of these activities
As Jasper and Dominic said, “It is better than sitting at home!” It certainly is.

THE POWER OF 3 (October Half Term 2008) During October half-term 75 young people aged 8-18yrs, took part in the'3' Festival at Newhampton Arts Centre in Whitmore Reans. The festival celebrated the anniversaries of 3 different Wolverhampton youth theatres: Kuumba Arts Movement (5 years), Village Playhouse (10 years) and Central Youth Theatre (25 years). Young people spent six months setting up the festival. They had a hand in every aspect from setting the theme, to booking the workshops, organising social events and overseeing the running of the festival from start to finish, gaining a great insight into arts administration. They also raised the funding with a successful application to the Youth Bank and a fund-raising ball at Bilston Town Hall. During the festival youngsters learnt skills such as Stage Combat, Comedy Acting, Lighting and Sound, Props and Costume Making, which they can put to good use in the future. The rest of the time was devoted to creating three plays from scratch, to be performed on the Friday evening to a sell-out audience. The week was a great success, and a tribute to the abundance of talent present in the youth of Wolverhampton. 'It was absolutely an amazing week and I had the time of my life. One of the highlights was that we got to meet different people from the other youth theatres and made loads of new friends. I got to play samba drums, have a go at special-effects make-up and stand-up comedy. Then there were the evening events: I never thought I would be enthusiastic about American square dancing! Pappy's fun club had us all laughing and cringing at the same time and I think it will be a while before the image of Tom wrapped in clingfilm is erased from our minds! The finale of the week was the three performances and it was great to watch the other groups perform after a week of hard work' Reporters: Leigh Coghill, |
