Last Sunday saw Newhampton Arts Centre hold a special concert performance for Ukraine to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee: Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. The DEC is an umbrella appeal that brings together 15 of the UK’s leading charities – including Oxfam, Save The Children, Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and the British Read Cross – to provide swift and coordinated responses to humanitarian crises across the world.

The concert featured a performance of the classical music favourite Peter and The Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev, performed by Toscana Strings.  Alongside the Toscana Strings, narrator Sophie Price told the story of the young boy Peter, a cat and duck, and their encounter with a ferocious grey wolf. Laura Tye, a former Birmingham Royal Ballet soloist, beautifully illustrated the story through dance.

Multi award winning string quintet Toscana Strings was founded in the Midlands in 2002 with all members having studied at Birmingham Conservatoire. Members have played with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, South Bank Sinfonia and the Britten Pears Orchestra, as well as recording with Ocean Colour Scene and The Twang.

The centre, based in Wolverhampton were also able to sell delicious Ukrainian cakes, tea and coffee which also saw all profits being donated to the appeal.

Chris Brown, facilities manager at NAC, said:

“We were so delighted we were able to sell out this performance on Sunday for a very important cause. We’d like to thank all our audience for supporting the event. We are delighted to announce that we raised £1290.28 from all ticket monies and other donations. We’d also like to thank Toscana Strings for their wonderful family performance and giving their time for free”
