Community 2024

‘Community’ brings you eight of the best bands from around the West Midlands in an 8 hour celebration of the local scene that also raises money for a worthy cause. After last year’s weather enforced move to November and the indoor theatre, the show is back ‘within tent’ in it’s now annual summer slot in the New Horizons marquee.

This year’s Community features, in alphabetical order, the following West Midlands bands:

BAUDELAIRE

With raw energy, sophistication and lyrics inspired by the godfather of goths, Baudelaire explore the darker aspects of human nature through their noisy and synthy alternative post-punk to deliver an experience as haunting as it is irresistible.

Established in 2021 in the West Midlands, the six piece outfit are renowned for their chaotic live performances, having shared stages with notable contemporaries such as Heartworms, Egyptian Blue, The Pale White, DITZ and Crows.

GIANT & THE GEORGES

A four piece featuring two brothers (the Georges) and a relatively tall man (the giant!), they’ve become known for their zingy hooks, tangy riffs and vocal harmonies sweeter than honey Dynamic performers, they blend shimmering indie-rock with frantic lyricism and combine their eclectic range of influences to captivate any audience (terms and conditions apply).

With a BBC Introducing Artist of the Week accolade to their name, over 20,000 streams of  their single ‘Don’t Remind Me’ and a song written specifically for hit BBC drama ‘Phoenix Rise’, Giant & The Georges are only going to get bigger!

THE GOOD WATER

The Good Water’s fuzz-fuelled guitar riffs, raw vintage organs and hypnotic drum beats lay the foundations for their own unique style of psychedelic, indie alt-rock.  The band’s singles have been strongly supported by various DJs on BBC6 Music as well as receiving continued support from BBC Introducing.

The psych-rock trio have built a loyal following throughout the Midlands and consistently sell out their headline shows which take you on a crazy ride of both sound and light. “If you like old school 60’s psych, bands like The Coral, you’ll love this.” –  Steve Lamacq, BBC6 Music

THE JACK CATTELL BAND

Having been wowing crowds over the last few years under just Jack’s name, The Jack Cattell Band is now very much  that… a collective that acknowledges the input of guitarist Anton Guttridge, bass player Ally Knott and drummer Josh Reid. Dynamic and uncompromising, their tunes drip with energy and personality.  Add some stylish beats, addictive riffs and a sprinkle of fun, and you have the perfect combination for a great time.

Last year saw them hit almost 90,000 streams on Spotify across 3,300 listeners!  We can only fit 250 of those under the New Horizons tent so make sure you are one of them! With numerous sold out headline shows under their belt, as well as prestigious support slots with The Pigeon Detectives and The Clause to name but two, The Jack Cattell Band are taking that next step and you can expect them to bring this year’s Community show to a rousing close.

JIM HUDSON

Wolverhampton based songwriter Jim Hudson writes unconventional yet melodic sounding music with indie roots.

His songs explore the depths of human experience through vivid metaphors and layered imagery, citing primary references such as Radiohead, Doves and Elliott Smith. Having performed over recent years as a solo acoustic act, Jim has now assembled a 4-piece band to expand the live experience. New music is currently evolving and will be ready for release later this year but his past releases have already garnered some great reviews: “One of the world’s most criminally underrated talents”– Louder Than War magazine “Exhilarating indie rock and pop” and  “songwriting gold” – Ryan’s Gig Guide review of single ‘Bones’

LITTLE JUKE

2024 seems to be the year for new names as Little Juke marks the beginning of a new chapter for Alex Ohm. The band, which was formed by Alex and previously performed under his own name, has been together for around four years but it is now moving forwards with a new identity – one that fully recognises the eclectic style and influences of guitarist Stephen Ashford, bass player Hannah Maiden and drummer Tom Crowson to produce what has been described as ‘cinematic indie’.  Those of you that attended the inaugural Community event in 2022 will already know what to expect, having experienced their superb headline set.

On the back of 2021’s uplifting summer anthem ‘JOY’ and highly praised EP ‘The Lost Persons Meeting Point’, a long awaited debut album is close to completion and will hopefully see the light of day this year.  “Multi-tracked, haunting vocals and distant, choppy rhythms.  Atmospheric, calm and compelling… crash(ing) into a fiddle-flecked mass of fuzzy guitars.” –  Louder Than War Magazine

OLLIE COOK

Ollie Cook is a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Wolverhampton.  His carefully crafted sound encapsulates the 18 year old’s personality and surroundings through grim-witted lyrics laid upon alt-rock/folk ditties. Born in the West Midlands and inspired by musical father Neal (The Wild Flowers, Saltflat, Drifthorse), Ollie took swiftly to the world of music with his earliest recorded output starting at just 14 to 15 years old.

Maturity and responsibility soon caught up with him, leading to his first album ‘The Boy With Pearls For Eyes’ – written, recorded and released in 2022 – and he has also dipped his fingers into film scores with long-time collaborator Joe Powner. Constantly working and evolving, Ollie now has a new band of brothers behind him as he continues to build a reputation as an excellent live performer.

A WEEK FULL OF MONDAYS

Originally formed in the summer of 2022, A Week Full of Mondays combine dense guitars with an air-tight rhythm section to create a bed for introspective yet observational lyrics.  Praised by their peers for melodic indie song writing alongside post rock and post punk imagery, AWFOM has been relentless in developing a distinct sound – blending brooding tones with melodic storytelling that results in a healthy mix of directness and vibe-casting.

Effortless stylistic meandering allows the quartet to shift from subdued musical passages to thunderous moments which dance on the cusp of hysteria in the process. Their uncompromising live performances have garnered them underground acclaim in the west midlands, as the group continue to build a following and a sound entirely on their terms.

In the event of unworkable weather conditions, the show will move indoors to the main theatre.
